My Planes

RV-8 N626CT

I've wanted to fly since the minute I learned it was possible. Flying is expensive and the cheapest way to own a plane is to build one. So I did. Apart from parenting, it proved to be the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. The first part of the kit arrived on January 15, 2001. It flew on Thanksgiving Day, 2002 after 3400 hours of work. It was a fully aerobatic 220 mph 2-person Ferrari in the sky. It carried me to Maine, New Hampshire, New York, DC, Florida, Oshkosh, Chicago, Death Valley, the Grand Canyon, San Francisco and most places in between. The highlight of all that travel was picking up my future wife in Fort Lauderdale and turning left to island hop through the Bahamas. Closed the deal.

So after doing it once, I thought it would be fun to do it again. I was wearing the proverbial rose-colored glasses. I bought this one after a kit builder gave up about halfway through. I finished the wings and tanks, installed the engine and finished the interior with a “hangar special” panel he’d started. After flying it back to California, I built a new VFR panel and upgraded the interior.
