Frequently Asked Questions
The journey to become a pilot is both exciting and demanding. Here are answers to the 50 most common questions prospective pilots often ask me:
“Equipment and Technology”
Do I need to buy my own headset or other equipment?
Yes, you’ll want to invest in your own headset. It’s one of the most important tools you’ll use as a pilot, and having your own ensures it fits comfortably and works well for you. A good headset can last for years, so think of it as an investment in your flying career. I can recommend a few models depending on your budget, and if you need help deciding, just ask!
Other equipment you’ll need includes a logbook to track your hours and progress, and I’d recommend having an electronic flight bag app like ForeFlight (we’ll talk more about that in a minute). You might also want a kneeboard, a good pair of sunglasses, and some basic pilot supplies, but we’ll go over everything you need before you start.
What technology or apps will I need during training?
We’ll be using Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course as our primary training resource. This comprehensive course includes ground school lessons, test preparation, and real-world flying tips—all in one easy-to-use package.
The course features over 20 hours of in-flight footage and 3D animations, making complex subjects like aerodynamics and weather easy to understand. It also includes a detailed maneuvers guide with 32 fully-narrated HD maneuvers, interactive written test prep with a database of over 1,000 FAA test questions, and a complete training syllabus.
Additionally, we’ll utilize ForeFlight during our training for flight planning and navigation. It’s a comprehensive app that provides essential tools for pilots, including weather briefings, flight plan filing, and in-flight navigation assistance.
Investing in these resources will provide a solid foundation for your training and help you progress efficiently. If you have any questions about accessing or using these tools, feel free to ask!
